Got my bloodwork back yesterday. Best news really. I expected my A1c to be high, considering it's an average of the last 3 months -- which were not that good eating wise. But to my shock, it was 5.5. 😲

In fact, all my numbers were awesome, with 2 exceptions. Not surprising, my LDL was slightly elevated (that's the bad cholesterol), but my HDL was in the "normal" range. And my triglycerides were slightly elevated too, although have come down from the last bloodwork. So, as the theme from a favourite show of mine as a kid said: We take the good, we take the bad, we take them both, and there you have... the facts of life!

One thing he said, which I disagree with 10000%, is with my A1c in "normal" range, I'm considered "non diabetic". NO! I am a diet-managed diabetic. I've seen my numbers rise exponentially when I diverge from my WOE. I will not allow myself to return to that. If I believe I am non diabetic, I will. And there is NO WAY I'm going backwards!

Happy Wednesday, FS family! Going forward. Be the turtle! 🐢

Well done! woooohooooo A1c of 5.5 is excellent! I, too, call myself a "diet-managed diabetic", so I never forget. You're doing awesome: an inspiration! :)

My A1C has been in the normal range for several years, but my doctor still considers me to be diet controlled type 2.

Thanks all. Yeah Liv, a strong reminder at that, lol. I wish Rhon, my doctor, as many other doctors, tend to think by the book, and not to the individual.

Great News… it is just as wonderful to hear about others victories as much as our own when we have them. To know that wellness is in some, if not most areas of of our lives, is just a matter of finding out what works for us. I say “just” because once we figure it out, it is rarely that complicated to keep it up… in that way, we are all explorer’s in our own best interests… :) it has been the best journey I have been on in decades really :) So, to CarbAbuser and all FS’ers, keep up the great work :) DV

First of all, congratulations and good work! Second, you give a second example to me of a person who was told by their doctor they no longer have diabetes based on the A1C. I was steady telling her she was still diabetic. I was certain she misunderstood her doctor. Her insulin was discontinued. She still took Metformin. Her morning FS BG ranged from 68-85. I wonder if the thinking has changed and they now look at DM2 as a continuum of metabolic health? I don't get it. She ate sugary cereal, crunchy bagged snacks, lots of ramen. Her proteins were fried or breaded meats. She did fast on the regular due to poverty and rationing food to last until the next check. Hearing your doctor say this to you makes me want to learn more about the diagnostic criteria for diabetes.

@ladyindenim... to my understanding, and the way I look at it, there is no cure for diabetes, only ways to control it. A diabetic can "reverse" their diagnosis, by diet management. However, if the patient returns to their old lifestyle & bad habits, that nasty little beast returns.

I agree with your take on it. I just wonder why these doctors said, "you no longer have diabetes," instead of "your diabetes is in remission."

Same issue here. I was diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetic. It scared me to death so in 2020 I stopped eating sugar & carbs, and got my A1c down to 5.7, lost about 100 lbs. My doctor declared me no longer diabetic. But now when I let my guard down, gain a little weight and start eating more sugar, I see my numbers go up. So I know that I'll never be truly "no longer diabetic", it will be diet-managed.

@Larilyn, if these questions are too personal, no offence taken. It sounds like you still check your blood sugars at home. Do you check based on how you feel, or do you check on a regular schedule? Does insurance continue to cover the testing supplies (and does doc prescribe them?) or do you use OTC supply? It seems very wise to stay vigilant, and my concern is about billing and diagnostic codes. In other words, does saying you are not diabetic translate to no more formal health care support for diabetic self care (podiatry, testing supplies)?

I have had my blood sugar "under control" since about October 2020, when I was able to discontinue Metformin. So now, I only test when I think about it, or if I want to see whether my sugar intake has had a drastic effect. My doctor had given me my first glucose test kit, so I just continue to buy the lancets and test strips - they are pretty cheap so I don't run them through insurance, but I pay for them with my HSA funds. My testing supplies are just over-the-counter. Over the last couple of years, I've slowly gained back about 20 pounds and it came on so gradually that I didn't notice it was happening. I'm having a hard time getting my original motivation back.

For me, my prescriptions for lancets and strips are covered 80%. I test weekly, or when I feel "off". Most times it's because I haven't slept well, but other times, it's a sugar high. If I catch it quickly, I can bring it back in. If I ignore it... well, it creeps up as fast as weight can. And although my doctor considers me "non diabetic" he still prescribes my strips, so, I guess that's a win.

Nosy Parker here thanks you. I can't imagine what it is like to have achieved ones weight and fitness goal. Maybe people keep pushing the envelope to stay motivated. I see lots of posts on here by people who used to be obese and are now tweaking their macros to further progress toward strength goals. Please share what works for you when you find it. I may be scrolling for motivation myself in 120 lb or so ☺️
